Atlantica Online is an old, old game. It first came out in 2008 and grabbed a ton of attention with its unique battle system. Unlike many other MMORPGs at the time, this battle system had you commanding a party much like traditional RPGs in a grid based combat. If that sounds interesting, read on.

The first thing you'll notice is that this game looks incredibly dated, much like many games in the late 2000s. Unlike many other games, this game didn't undergo any sort of graphical overhaul to make it look less dated, which is a shame. However, you shouldn't let that dissuade you.

The general gameplay loop is identical to normal MMORPGs - you accept quests, slay monsters, follow a main storyline, and get stronger along the way. To be perfectly honest, if you take the battle system away, there is pretty much nothing special about this game.

That battle system, though? One of the best in MMORPGs. Once you engage an enemy, you will be transported to a separate battle screen where both your side and the enemies are on a 3x3 grid. This gives a lot of strategic choices - melee characters can only hit enemies that don't have anybody in front of them, while guns can pierce through and bows can hit whoever they want.

All in all, if you want to experience a fantastic battle system in an MMORPG, you should give Atlantica Online a try.
