Tower Defense games have generally fallen out of favor in the mainline gaming industry in the 21st century. There are very few tower defense games in the AAA market, and even if they're there, it's usually as part of a gimmick or a minigame. Thus, Flash games have had time to refine and innovate on the formula by themselves. The Bloons Tower Defense series is probably the best example of this innovation. Let's look at GemCraft Zero: Gem of Eternity.

This game has a much heavier emphasis on story, with it being a prequel to the original. You play as a wizard who has become obsessed with the fabled Gem of Eternity. He's so obsessed, in fact, that he got expelled by his colleagues.

This game provides enough tutorials to allow you to skip the original game easily. You just need to place magical gems atop towers to attack the monsters, and you have to combine your gems to keep them up to date. This game does add a bit more to the formula, though - winning a battle now gives you experience which increases your level. Levels unlock skills and new battle modes for each area, and there are also a massive number of achievements.

All in all, Gemcraft Zero: Gem of Eternity is one of the best Flash tower defense games in terms of content and gameplay.
