Flash games were like the wild west. During the time they were around, modern game design in and of itself wasn't fully fleshed out. Sure, there were a couple of soft rules, but experimentation was everywhere.  Flash games were and are the most experimental games you can play around as they don't really care what's "right" and what's "wrong". Motherload is one of the first games that experimented out there.

To play Motherload, simply boot up whatever SWF player you have and execute the SWF file in it.

The game is incredibly simple. You simply use the arrow keys or WASD to move your mining rig around. You can use your mouse to select options when you're at the store. You need to get valuable minerals to sell, and refuel at the fuel rig on the surface. You need to dig deeper and deeper into the surface of Mars to find more minerals, treasure, and upgrades. Running out of fuel will cause a game over.

That's the basic gameplay loop. The story is just as simple. You're a miner given a robotic mining pod and sent off to mine Mars for valuable materials.

All in all, Motherload was one of the first casual games with a simple, yet incredibly addicting gameplay loop. Something that the most popular games nowadays take a note from.
