Sonic fan games are some of the strangest beasts out there. During its most popular era, there was a ton of fan content, most of which are shoddily made or incredibly "edgy". The Sonic RPG series is no stranger to any of these fan content tropes. In fact, it might seem like one of the worst offenders of it.

However, the evolution of the series is quite interesting. There are three eras to it - episodes 1-4, which are very badly written, episodes 5-8, which have high production value and better writing, and episodes 9-10, which revamp the gameplay completely. Let's look at Sonic RPG Episode 4-1.

To play Sonic RPG Episode 4-1, simply run it with whatever SWF player you have.

This entry is a lot shorter than the others, and is split into two parts as a result. Quite frankly, not much happens this entry. The cast gets stuck in a cave, gets saved by Shadow, and unlock some new powers by the end. The gameplay is still completely linear and the visuals are still incredibly shoddy and slapped together.

It also ends in a totally unceremonious cliffhanger telling you to play the second part just as the game was getting good. Sonic RPG Episode 4-1 takes a step back fro the constant improvement the last few entries showed and it's really quite disappointing.
