2D platformers have been steadily getting ignored by the AAA gaming industry, leaving it up to indie developers to take up the mantle. However, the progenitor of indie games, flash games, have also gone really far in creating high quality 2d platformers. One of the best-known ones is the Fancy Pants series. Let's look at the first entry - The Fancy Pants Adventures: World 1.

This game takes many cues from Sonic the Hedgehog. Namely, insane speed and open ended levels that have a ton of alternate routes. The main character is a stickman with a slick hairstyle and some very fancy pants, which is actually enough to make him one of the most recognizable Flash series characters out there.

The controls are simple. Press down to crouch, left and right to move, s to jump, and down on a slope to turn into a ball.

The gameplay is incredibly fast paced, which works both to its advantage and its detriment. One of the biggest problems this game has is how small the screen is. When you're moving at incredibly high speeds, some enemies will appear far too quickly for you to react to, leading to practically unavoidable damage unless you've memorized the level's layout.

All in all, however, The Fancy Pants Adventures: World 1 is a great game that has some of the smoothest animations around.
