Sandbox MMOs are a risky proposition, especially now that the general public has gotten used to the theme park style MMOs that World of Warcraft popularized. Most players would feel lost and confused on how to proceed in a truly sandbox experience. However, the sandbox MMOs that do it right were some of the most memorable experiences of their time, and Wurm Online does its best to recreate that.

This game is an old school RPG, for better or worse. The game is almost entirely sandbox, with towns, structures, and even monuments all being created by players. Much like Minecraft, the terrain can be terraformed, so you can pave a road through a mountain, create underground passages, and more. If you find an open spot with good resources around, then it's yours for the taking.

There's a staggering amount of freedom. The catch is the game is absolutely horrendous to play. The graphics are terrible, the interface is even worse, and it's so clunky that half the time you're fighting the game. Everything is against you in this world. Its learning curve is so steep it might as well be a cliff.

However, if you manage to get past the initial curve, then you'll quickly find that this is one of the most satisfying games to play, letting you create things that few MMORPGs will let you. The review score doesn't tell the whole story - I just cannot objectively say this game is fantastic on all counts. If any of that sounds appealing, definitely give Wurm Online a download.
