This game is created in the Duke Nukem 3D engine, which may look strange for something that was originally entirely in 2D. However, the creator smartly instead created a hybrid between 3D and 3D. While the environment is in 3D, the characters are all in 2D.

The maps are also recreated very faithfully in 3D, meaning that if you've played the original, you likely won't ever get lost. Just like in the original, the dream world is where most of the gameplay takes place. You have to explore your dreams in search of keys and "effects" which give you different powers that help you solve puzzles. Each effect changes her in some way. One will change her into a bicycle so she can get around quicker, another gives her a frog's head, and a third makes her monochromatic.

All in all, Yume Nikki 3D is a great fan recreation of the original in 3D. A new perspective can change how you view and play a game.
