The Monster Hunter series is one of the most popular niche series ever, spawning its own subgenre of...well, monster hunting. In the genre,  you have to hunt down single, powerful monsters and use their materials to create better gear. There have been a lot of imitators - unfortunately, considering the genre itself is a niche, many of them have failed to take hold. One of them managed to break that trend, however - Dauntless.

The first thing you'll notice is the art style. Unlike the mainline games that have a realistic style or imitators that tend to have an anime-inspired art style, Dauntless features an art style more similar to western 3D animation like Pixar or Disney. Another thing is that its cinematics features your character in the forefront, giving it more story immersion than most imitators.

If you've played Monster Hunter, you'll be familiar with the main gameplay loop. You have to set out from a hub village, destroy some monsters that all have unique attacks and use their materials to upgrade your gear. Each piece of equipment has its own perks and stats.

Dauntless stands out from its imitators in its constant updates and the smooth flow of the gameplay. As it is completely free to play on top of that, it's incredibly easy to give this game at least to try.
