Tower Defense games have generally fallen out of favor in the mainline gaming industry in the 21st century. There are very few tower defense games in the AAA market, and even if they're there, it's usually as part of a gimmick or a minigame. Thus, Flash games have had time to refine and innovate on the formula by themselves. The Bloons Tower Defense series is probably the best example of this innovation. Let's look at GemCraft: Chasing Shadows.

To play GemCraft: Chasing Shadows, simply run the game with whatever SWF player you have.

Once again, the basic gameplay hasn't changed because it's been a winning formula. However, there are quite a few things that have changed under the hood. For instance, you can now manually choose the type of gem you want to create, additional speeds you can set your levels to, and modify levels with traits. On top of that, the visual changes this game makes are genuinely gorgeous.

Unfortunately, while the gameplay has been refined, they've also doubled down on the heavy grinding from the last game. If you're impatient, you can now purchase currency to cut down on the insane grind this game features.

All in all, you'd have to be willing to look past the grind to truly enjoy the game, but some may enjoy that along with the builds you can create.
