Halo Zero Review
Last Updated: 2020-11-18 17:37:09
Halo revolutionized shooters back in the early 2000s. Even to this day, shooters are all designed on the foundation that Halo set down. A dedicated grenade and a melee button, regenerating health, and two weapon limits. The sheer popularity of the game led to a ton of different fan games that were made of it - one of them is Halo Zero.
To install Halo Zero, simply unzip the files and run the executable.
The story apparently takes place before Halo 1, but as a lore nerd myself, I can safely say that this is non-canon and is its own story. It can't slot into the timeline at any point. This is understandable because it's very possible the developer didn't read side content and just made his own spin on things, which is perfectly fine.
The gameplay itself is very straightforward. It's Halo, but 2D. However, that does mean a couple of things. For instance, enemies can attack you off screen, which you can imagine is not particularly fun to deal with. It's also near impossible to dodge enemy attacks, which makes the higher difficulty unbalanced.
Enemy AI is also nonexistent. They will just walk up and shoot at you. This leads to most firefights in the game simply you and the enemy standing and shooting at each other, and whoever dies first loses.
All in all, Halo Zero is a fairly alright fan game, but it's utterly unbalanced on higher difficulties and has monotonous gameplay as well. If you can look past that, then you should give it a shot.
