Natural Selection Review

There are a couple of different genres out there, but surprisingly, one of the least used hybrids are RTS/FPS. These two genres don't seem compatible at first glance. Even the most hotkey heavy RTSes are usually more deliberate than the average twitch-based FPS shooter. However, what if I said that over a decade ago, there already was a mod that had that exact mix? Meet Natural Selection.

To play Natural Selection, make sure you have Steam installed. Once that's done, run the installer and you're good to go.

There are two teams in this game - the Marines and the Aliens. The marines have a commander, whose view of the battlefield is from a strict top down perspective. The commander can then purchase upgrades, issue movement orders and drop supplies, much like many other RTs games. The commander can also place buildings that the players in the field must build themselves.

The aliens have no defined leader, and instead have a builder class. These builders can be used to build a ton of different structures. Some damage marines from afar, some farm resources, and some help defend the area. Each alien player can use their own resource points to evolve or build further buildings.

This is a game about territory control, and both teams must constantly fight for certain territories to win the game. Overall, if you want to experience an incredibly unique gameplay style, then you should definitely give Natural Selection a download. It holds up extremely well even to this day.
