The Ranger 1.0

DOOM is one of the oldest FPSes in existence, and its engine is famously so robust that it can run on pretty much anything and also create pretty much anything.  From FPSes to RPGs to companions to a city living game, it has a ton of different mods that can all do different things. One of them is a mod for Hexen that can be played inside GZDoom that also adds a brand new character to the game. Let's look at The Ranger.

To install The Ranger, you need to have GZDoom. Then, copy the .pk3 file into the GZDoom folder and drag it on top of the GZDoom.exe to start playing.

This is an incredible mod for Hexen. The new character plays completely differently from everybody else and it really shows. It's incredibly satisfying to blast the enemies in Hexen with a ton of firearms while also cracking a bunch of jokes. However, there are a couple of problems with this approach.

The most glaring and obvious one is the fact that Hexen's atmosphere is incredibly grim and it's also specifically in medieval times to set itself apart from the typical futuristic FPS. So you can probably get a sense of how a wisecracking gunslinger kind of doesn't fit the setting.

This character also has to reload, which makes him play significantly slower than every other Hexen character just by its very existence.

Overall, The Ranger is an incredibly impressive character mod that the DOOM mod community has been getting known for.
