DOOM is one of the oldest FPSes in existence, and its engine is famously so robust that it can run on pretty much anything and also create pretty much anything. From FPSes to RPGs to companions to a city living game, it has a ton of different mods that can all do different things. Full conversion mods are not uncommon and can change the game to be something else entirely. One of them is Vomitoreum.
To install Vomitoreum, simply unzip all the files into a folder of your choosing and run the executable.
The game opens with a slideshow detailing the story of the game. Years ago, the Vomitoreum descended from outer space and cursed the world, spreading an infection that turned men into monsters and infecting the world with a fog until they were eventually purged from the world by a hero wielding a sword of life leading an alliance. Unfortunately, the infection returned after one year, after the initial alliance split off. One of the resulting factions decided to create a monster to destroy the Vomitoreum permanently, and you play as the end result of that experiment.
From the beginning of the game, you'll get a Dark Souls vibe, from how the name of the area you just entered will fade onto the screen and how there's no directions given to you. You simply have to explore and find out what to do yourself. It's designed like a Metroidvania as well, meaning that you can't access many areas in the world until you've found a certain weapon or upgrade.
The game's graphics are also beautiful, giving it a very distinct look from its GZDoom origins. If you want to try out an FPS that's trying to do some new things, then you should definitely give Vomitoreum a download. If you want to support the game, there's a kickstarter page right here.
