Low-budget indie games tend to be some of the most creative around, assuming they aren't just flipping assets poorly in Unity. Without the budget to dazzle the audience with beautiful graphics, they instead need to focus on something else to stand out. These restrictions can lead to some very creative premises. Let's look at Zortch.
To install Zortch, simply unzip the files inside the archive into any folder you want.
The plot is as basic as they get. You were tricked by aliens and got captured by them while you were on vacation. Now, you sit in a cell waiting for them to eat your brain. However, you very quickly grab a multi-tool wrench and break your way out of your cell to start one hell of a killing spree.
There's no story after that. Even the end screen is simply a score screen that judges you based on how quickly you escaped. The gameplay is king here, and it is incredibly fun. You have the usual bevy of FPS abilities, with an extra jump kick added (which always improves any FPS game) as well as a bevy of power-ups scattered throughout that completely change how engagements play out, like invisibility.
The game has a massive tongue-in-cheek tone throughout as well. You'll probably notice that the aliens have very large...assets, which already solidifies its tone, but there are also alien vending machines scattered throughout and soda cans littered everywhere.
All in all, Zortch is an incredibly unique game that everybody should check out.
