Discord 1.0

Discord is a server which allows the user to create their own chatrooms and communities based around a certain topic, game or shared interest.

Discord was created due to some security issues with current text chat based platforms and originally created originally for gaming communities to use such as eSports and LAN tournaments it is now popular with all kinds of communities including stock traders and fantasy football enthusiasts.

Discord can serve many purposes especially if you have something you want to promote, game designers can create a whole community and chat room where they can have all the followers of that game and communicate directly with those followers about any developments, changes or general information on that topic.

Discord is completely free to use for the host of the server or for anyone guests within that server, there is a premium service available (Discord Nitro) which offers you some extras for a monthly fee however the main actions of Discord can all be accessed for free.

You can choose which servers you join on Discord and the groups are then neatly arranged in the sidebar making it very easy to switch between the groups that you are interested in.

After creating chatrooms it’s a very simple process to invite friends to join those groups. Discord doesn’t have the security or pricing issues you may find with something like Curse Voice or Team Speak and isn’t heavy on your memory like Skype can be and yet offers the same functions in text, voice and video chat meaning that Discord stands head and shoulders above it’s competitors.
