Microsoft Security Essentials Review

This is the 64 bit version of Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7/Vista. For all other versions, including Windows XP, visit our Security Software section.

Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is a free antivirus created and supported by Microsoft itself. It provides you with the latest in protection against malware, spyware, and adware. While there is no instance of internet security with this application, if you happen to download a malicious file from the internet, it will be caught after the download has completed and the file attempts to open. Microsoft Security Essentials requires very little maintenance and stays up to date with the latest in virus definitions so that your computer is constantly protected.

Microsoft gifted Microsoft Security Essentials users with a clean, mature interface that is unobtrusive and allows you to get the most out of the application. The application is mostly blue and white, but accented colors help you identify the state of your computer. If the application is accented with green, that means that your computer is protected and ready for daily use. If it glows a pale yellow, this means that your virus definitions need to be updated. This is easy to do, just simple click the big yellow update button on the same page or visit the update tab. If the application is accented in red, that could mean a couple of things, the most basic being that your computer is 'At Risk" of an infection. It could also mean that  an extended period of time has passed without the application updating or that the computer contains a malicious file and  swift action needs to be taken.
