Low budget indie games tend to be some of the most creative around, assuming they aren't just flipping assets poorly in Unity. Without the budget to create an epic, the creators instead need to focus on one unique feature to make their games stick out. From these restrictions come some truly inventive concepts. One of them is Skelethrone, which is a short experimental game about the moon disappearing.
To play Skelethrone, simply run the executable.
First off, this game is beautiful. It takes the Cuphead route where every single frame is hand-animated, which gives it a ton of life. The world is massive and detailed, with each area having its own unique flavor.. It takes place in a dark fantasy version of the Dark Ages, giving it a feel similar to Castlevania or Dark Souls.
True to those games, the game is extremely difficult. In fact, I'd wager that the opening few levels are a bit too punishing even for a hard genre like Metroidvania. The enemies move a bit too quick and movement options are a bit too limited for you to respond properly.
The game is also designed like Dark Souls - the world is incredibly non-linear, letting you tackle bosses in whatever order you want while also collecting loot. If you're good enough at movement, you can even sequence break.
All in all, if you want to play a game with an incredibly unique premise and incredibly punishing gameplay, then you should give Skelethrone a download.
