#1KILL Review

Angelo Jefferson is a well-regarded figure in the DOOM community thanks to his map, Number One Kill The Next Generation. When people talk about lesser-known maps, it always comes up. However, the even less recognized map is the original #1Kill, which was an E2 replacement released all the way back in 1997. We're taking a look at it today.

To install #1Kill, you need to have ZDoom and unzip the WAD files into the GZDoom folder, which is pretty par for the course for DOOM maps.

This map has 9 levels. It starts out with small levels that are fairly tricky but eventually moves on to the bigger body counts. Towards the end, there are almost 400 enemies in one level, and the density of each level is quite high compared to the OG DOOM. There are also a ton of different environmental obstacles, from trippy 3D effects to disorient yougiant mazes, or just flashing lights

There are a ton of things holding it down, though. For instance, you'll have to kill hundreds of enemies with just the shotgun alone, making everything feel boring. You have to use this weapon for so long that it definitely drags. On top of that, the eye-straining mazes are never fun, and they run on for way too long. There are also massive lighting issues that make it hard to navigate a few of these levels as well, as even with brightness maxed out I could hardly make it out.

Overall, it's easy to see why his later works are more highly regarded. If you want to experience history, though, try #1Kill out.
