Christmas in the Mountains Review

Low-budget indie games tend to be some of the most creative around, assuming they aren't just flipping assets poorly in Unity. Without the budget to dazzle the audience with beautiful graphics, they instead need to focus on something else to stand out. These restrictions can lead to some very creative premises. Let's look at Christmas in the Mountains.

This was made for a Christmas Game Jam, and so it is quite simple. However, it is a very engaging little narrative experience. In this game, you follow a young boy who has been tasked by his mother to complete the town tradition of going door to door and handing out presents. She gives you the all-clear to act like the local Santa and decide who to give presents are depending on whether you think they're naughty or nice.
It's a simple premise and the game really only lasts ten minutes. You only interact with them for about three lines of dialogue. Yet, this game manages to make you feel like you know who they are with that tiny amount of time. It's a very impressive achievement on the level of something Helltaker managed to do, except this game doesn't even have the benefit of good art of demon girls in suits. I've played many games that do less with a hundred times more words.
All in all, Christmas in the Mountains is an incredibly unique game that everybody should check out.
