FlightGear Flight Simulator Review

A free, open sourced multi platform flight simulator developed by the FlightGear project since 1997, FlightGear Flight Simulator (also known as FlightGear or FGFS) is a long running open source developed by plane fans for over 15 years helping you practice your pilot skill on your personal computer. It can be powered by an array of different PC set ups, whether an older PC or a quite new PC.

Having started the project on April 8, 1996, David Murr wanted to create a free open source computer video game flight simulator that could be run in the home. The project had its first release in 1997 and continued development ever since. The most recent release, being version 3.0, was released in February of 2014. It has specific builds for a variety of operating systems including all modern versions of Microsoft Windows. The FlightGear code is released under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) and is free, open sourced software.

There are a few commercial products that are based off of the older version of FlightGear and has greatly influenced many modern flight simulators since it's original release back in 1997. These commercial products are not endorsed by the FlightGear project and they do not profit from the commercial products.

David Murr, the original author of FlightGear Flight Simulator, proposed a new flight simulator developed by volunteers over the Internet as an alternative to available flight simulators on the market such as Microsoft Flight Simulator. This flight simulator used custom 3D graphics code and development of an OpenGL version was thought out by co-author Curtis Olson also starting in 1997. This made way for future development of the simulator for years to come.

If you are practicing your pilot skills or just want to play a flying simulator, definitely give FlightGear Flight Simulator a try.
