Low budget indie games tend to be some of the most creative around, assuming they aren't just flipping assets poorly in Unity. Without the budget to create an epic, the creators instead need to focus on one unique feature to make their games stick out. From these restrictions comes some truly inventive concepts. One of them is Hermit Home Designer, a game where you help a Japanese hikikomori design her home to be as comfortable as possible.

This game starts off with you helping a cheerful, charming, and paradoxically extremely introverted Japanese hermit named Yamasen-Chan design her den as beautifully as possible. It starts off fairly normal, with you selecting objects and placing them around her apartment. You can place them however you like, and she will comment on it.

In between each room you help design, the plot will progress and things will steadily become weirder and weirder as you accommodate her increasingly insane house choices, to the point where the mood flips completely and starts becoming disturbing. This isn't a full on horror game, mind you. Yamasen's cheerful mood and the fact that nothing truly terrifying happens stops it from falling neatly in that genre. It's just one of those games that sets a pit in your stomach and makes you feel like something terrible will happen at any point.
