Visual novels are one of the most popular genres for indie developers to make games for, due to there being a fantastic free engine out there that helps people easily make visual novels, as well as the low amount of resources required relative to other genres. As a result, indie developers need to do something unique in this genre to stand out. Juniper's Knot tackles this with a unique premise.
To install Juniper's Knot, make sure you have Steam installed and go to this link to install it.
The story is set in some unspecified time between the 19th to 20th century. A boy gets lost on his way home and stumbles into a church where he meets a demon who looks like a young girl. There are no other characters - the whole story is carried by these two. While it seems simple on paper, it actually takes a ton of effort as you have to make two characters carry the entire dramatic weight of the story. For the most part, they succeeded in making these two characters likable enough to carry the story on their own. However, it's worth noting that the game is incredibly short, with it lasting half an hour if you're quick.
Every other aspect is well utilized as well. The graphics and CG are well drawn and the audio works out well. If you want to experience a short story that has absolutely fantastic character interactions and banter, as well as legitimate tension, you should give Juniper's Knot a try.
