One of the oldest running MMOs you'll find on the Internet, the original Ragnarok Online is a Korean massive multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) that was developed by Gravity Interactive. Dating all the way back to 2002, Ragnarok Online started out in South Korea for Windows and has since been released to the other regions of the world.
Ragnarok Online has sparked enough interest and popularity for there to be an animated series and a sequel made of the game. There are many large official servers available to find around the Internet, as well as a bunch of private servers hosted for smaller groups of people. The popularity of the game has definitely been an inspiration for a lot of more recent MMOs to be released.
When it comes to the servers, the major types of server supported gameplay are Player vs Environment (PvE), Guild vs Guild, Player vs Player (PvP), while also supporting arena combat, Player vs Monster, and Player vs All gameplay. There are also scenarios at instance locations throughout the game world for the player to accomplish, while there also being NPC-run challenges and contests with prizes, awards, or hall of fame listings.
Ragnarok takes place on two major continents with each of them having their own terrain and native monsters. Ragnarok Online also have a built in transportation system, similar as with other MMOs, to aid you quickly getting around the world. Within the two continents on the map, there are three major nations. The starting kingdom, Rune Midgard, being one of the three and is the first place greeting the player when you start playing the game. The other two are the Schwaltzvalt Republic, a nation of industry, and Arunafeltz which is a religious nation.
As well as many of the quests you can do around the map to progress in the game, there are also various activities around the map to take up your time, as well as a job system which is one of the most important aspect of the game for progression. The job system allows you to select a role which will ultimately determine each character's strengths and weaknesses within the game. There are 13 classes to choose from in the job system which specialize in their own specific skills in the game corresponding to archetypes in a role playing game.
